Illinois Senate Bill 1161, the Fuel Gas Detector Act, faced significant legislative obstacles. Recognizing an opportunity to elevate its public profile, I developed a targeted media outreach strategy to bring the legislation to the attention of Chicago news outlets.

My efforts secured coverage with WGN investigative reporter Lourdes Duarte, including an on-site interview with Senator Wilcox and coordination of relevant legislative background information. The resulting evening news coverage amplified public awareness of the bill and contributed to its momentum as it advanced through the Senate Public Safety Committee to the Senate floor for consideration.

The Post 9/11 Education Act

Seeking opportunities to contribute beyond my assigned responsibilities, I independently conceived and drafted the Post-9/11 Education Act, a legislative proposal aimed at modernizing Illinois high school history and government curricula. Recognizing large gaps in how recent history is taught, I sought to incorporate September 11, 2001, and the major geopolitical, economic, and technological developments that followed into classroom instruction and debate.

My original proposal subsequently underwent revisions by caucus legislative staff to improve its appeal to viable stakeholders. The two documents below illustrate the evolution of my independently developed concept into a professionally revised legislative proposal.
